Travel sparks the imagination – before, during and after a trip, in ways we may not even realize. You might be inclined to learn a few words of the language spoken in the countries you’ll be visiting; to research the culture, geography, and history; to seek out the best restaurants, museums, and points of interest; or even just to lose a few pounds before that beach vacation. Studies show that the mere act of planning a trip, and the anticipation of getting away, can boost your happiness for up to eight weeks – how’s that for inspiration?
Of course, inspiration abounds during a trip, too, whether it’s home décor (every time one friend inspects her hotel room upon check-in, she says, “I want to redesign my bathroom like this one!”), cuisine (looking to re-create that pasta dish you tried in Italy? Turn to page 72), or something deeper: the desire to help the communities you visit (page 71, 122) or reimagine your life goals.
For parents, travel is an opportunity to raise engaged, informed global citizens (page 138) – and there’s nothing like seeing the world anew through your child’s eyes.
Memories of our travels stay with us long after we return, and physical mementoes are tangible reminders of time well spent. Such ephemera is showcased on our cover, real items that real travelers felt compelled to keep, if only for a fleeting smile when they stumble across a ticket stub in their desk drawer. A couple of colleagues have kept the key to every hotel room they’ve stayed in, with the lofty goal of someday arranging them into an art piece. Why didn’t I think of that?
In the “How To Travel Better” issue of Virtuoso Life, you’ll not only find inspiration for your next trip, but for travel done right. From advisor tips and tricks to the ultimate trips to the best products, gadgets, and gear, we hope we motivate you to get going!
MY MEMENTOES (above, from top): A gilded orchid from Singapore; a tassel from a luncheon on the Great Wall of China; a ticket from an after-hours tour of the Vatican, when we had the Sistine Chapel to ourselves (your advisor can make that happen); a tiny jeweled egg charm from Saint Petersburg; and a VIP Center Court ticket to Wimbledon (your advisor can make that happen too).
