Until we’re able to be on safari again, andBeyond is bringing the safari to us. The tour operator – which specializes in high-end trips to Africa, South America, India, and Bhutan – broadcasts daily game drives on Instagram Live from its Phinda Private Game Reserve in South Africa. The streams attract thousands of viewers, and now, a new upgraded experience gives travelers a chance to book one-on-one time with an andBeyond guide after the game drive. Bonus: It’s for a sustainable cause.
After tracking game in the 70,000-acre reserve in South Africa’s Kwa-Zulu-Natal province – this time of year, cheetah, lion, and even endangered black rhino sightings are common – one of andBeyond’s guides will hop on Zoom with you and up to five guests for a private, post-drive download. It’s a fun way to mix up a virtual happy hour (don’t forget the sundowners), an extra-credit zoology lesson for kids, or an exciting sneak peek at what’s to come for a family with plans for an IRL safari.
The experience’s $200 fee directly benefits guides, as well as andBeyond’s sustainability initiatives, including the Africa Foundation’s coronavirus fundraising project, which provides medical care, food security, and water access in rural affected communities. The Phinda Private Game Reserve has been closed since mid-March, with plans to reopen after travel restrictions lift.
More virtual experiences in the works from andBeyond include fully private game drives, along with personalized cooking, yoga, and meditation classes. And while nothing beats spotting a cheetah from an open-air four-wheel drive, this virtual face time will do for now.
