Earlier this month, Michelin revealed the restaurants on its first-ever Michelin Guide California – and we collectively added 90 more places to our culinary wish list.

The Michelin Guide California makes the Golden State the first state in the U.S. to get its own Michelin publication. Previously, Michelin only ranked restaurants in the Bay Area. (L.A. used to have its own Michelin Guide, but the publication ceased in 2009.) A few highlights from the guide: Ninety restaurants received new stars or kept their previous stars – 59 in and around San Francisco, 24 in L.A., and a handful of others in Monterey, San Diego, Costa Mesa, and Sacramento. Seven venues earned a prestigious three stars, and they’re all in the Bay Area: The Restaurant at Meadowood, Atelier Crenn, Benu, The French Laundry, Manresa, Quince, and SingleThread.

Seven restaurants at Virtuoso hotels in the Bay Area and Los Angeles made the list:

Three Michelin Stars
The Restaurant at Meadowood at Meadowood Napa Valley

Two Michelin Stars
Campton Place at the Taj Campton Place in San Francisco
Somni at the SLS Hotel, A Luxury Collection Hotel, Beverly Hills

One Michelin Star
Addison at the Fairmont Grand Del Mar in San Diego
Cut by Wolfgang Puck at The Beverly Wilshire in Beverly Hills
Madera at Rosewood Sand Hill in Menlo Park
The Restaurant at Farmhouse Inn in Forestville

Since handing out its first star in the early 1900s, Michelin has been the unofficial overlord of restaurant bragging rights worldwide. Michelin’s Restaurant Guides are published in more than 25 countries  – and the one- to three-star ranking system rewards dining establishments that use quality products, possess a “mastery of flavor,” and consistently impress diners, among other criteria. Translation: If you want a great meal in a new city, a Michelin-starred restaurant is usually a solid place to start.
